2009 Season Recap

November 11, 2009

2009 Group T 2nd place points championship.

October 15, 2009

It's been a busy last few months as we wound out the desert season for 2009. We decided last minute not to race the Vegas to Reno but to focus our efforts on finishing out the Vorra season. We raced the Vorra Fallon 250 and despite breaking a steering link just 1 mile from the start and two flats late in the race we brought the truck home in 5th place just 12 minutes out of the top spot.
3 weeks later we were at the Super Bowl of 1450 racing at the MDR night race in Lucerne Valley in August. Of the 39 starters we finished an impressive 3rd in class with absolutely no troubles or down time.
Just 2 weeks after Lucerne we were back at it again in Hawthorne for the Vorra 250 on Labor Day weekend. Drive line troubles off the start and getting stuck in the deep sand later in the race slowed us but we were still in the hunt for the win but settled for second place for the day and 6th place overall.
October 9-11 was the Off-Road Expo and the Total Chaos / Koenig racing was all shiny and ready for the 3 day show in Southern California.
As we look towards the last race of the season at the Prairie City short course in Sacramento, we are also starting to look towards next season. While missing the last race due to Off-Road Expo took us out of the hunt for the points title in Group T (the combined truck class) we are still looking at a solid podium for the year.

Total Chaos coordinated for a test session last Friday with Mike & Troy to test the 3.4 motor conversion and new Doug Thorley exhaust system in Nevada . Unfortunately a busted valve spring dampened the parade on filming many laps too early but repairs to the motor Saturday night & Sunday AM were made and testing resumed in Prairie City on Sunday. The next VORRA race is this weekend where the truck will be racing.

A couple of new pictures from the test are in the photo section.

After much delay in keeping the website up and for good reason. Mike and I spent the last 4 weeks putting a new bullet in the 603 race truck. That's right. More horespower, more torque, more motor, more speed. Look out V8's--we're coming for you.

In the 110 degree heat testing at Prairie City went great breaking in the new motor, new 3rd member and new Total Chaos rear trailing arms. With Fallon just 3 weeks away and Vegas to Reno another month after that we have lot's of work to do.

NV 09 is in the books. Here is the write up.

April 28, 2009

With the last minute decision to race the entire Vorra season Mike quickly prepped the truck from the San Felipe race with just a wash and timing belt replacement. The timing belt was frayed and jumped a cam tooth making the truck down on horsepower. The March 29 short course race a Prairie City was very good for Mike in the oversized, under-horse-powered desert truck at a short course track. The lengthened 1.5-mile Prairie City track has some tight turns that favor the purpose built short course trucks. But with the mindset to finish Mike quickly proved he’s a racer when the green flag dropped. In the 7 truck field Mike was 3rd to the first turn and kept the pressure on 2nd place all 8 laps until the last turn Mike was able to make the pass and take the moto one finish in 2nd. Moto 2 Mike ran real well in 2nd the entire race until the last half a lap when the truck started to run out of gas. Having the timing off for most of San Felipe threw off the gas mileage calculations and there was less gas in the tank than he thought. Fortunately he had a big enough lead over 3rd place that he could short shift and keep the pick-up in the gas and finish the moto in 2nd taking 2nd overall for the day.

The April 26 race put two truck classes on the track at the same time. Mike was holding his ground taking 3rd place in class in moto one. In moto two he was again running 3rd place when the right rear axle broke out of the truck ending the day.

As we look ahead to the desert new parts are on order and rumor is that a bigger engine is on its way.

KOENIG RACING MAKES BID AT 2009 VORRA GROUP T CHAMPIONSHIP

Mike Koenig announced last week that he would be making a bid for the 2009 Vorra Group T season championship by returning to short course racing March 27-28 at Prairie City SVRA in Sacramento. Having purpose built desert trucks kept Mike from racing the tight short course series. Mike will be campaigning the Total Chaos Toyota Tacoma at both the spring series races before the series moves to the desert summer series in Yerington, Fallon and Hawthorne, NV then returns to Sacramento in the fall for 2 more races. Mike hopes to have the championship locked up by the end of the desert series.

Locos Mocos San Felipe Race Report

Racing the San Felipe 250 was a blast. It was the first Baja race effort for Locos Mocos and Koenig Racing. In a four-truck field we got second in Class 6. Truck owner Mike Koenig and Locos Mocos Head Honcho Stu Klein started the race in the Toyota Tacoma. Locos Mocos guys Troy Robinson and Tim Schrader took over at about midway and brought it to the finish after a tough 7 hours and 4 minutes.

Our fun started on Wednesday at the amazing beach-side San Felipe house owned by Locos Mocos brother Steve Brosz (thanks 3 Ball and Kenna!). After the 14-hour overnight drive from Norcal, we grabbed some much-needed rest and enjoyed a little beach time. On Thursday Mike went out early to prerun the northern section while Troy preran the southern section. As always our Total Chaos-equipped prerunners were more than up to the job. (thanks Total Choas!). We all met back later at the house and held a birthday bash for our gracious host.

On Friday contingency took up most of the day. And for us it was almost as much fun as the race. (Ask any one of us how the race truck made it through tech using some fish net we found on the beach. Locos Mocos can fix anything, anywhere!) While in line with the race truck, Mark Naugle (Locos Mocos “BCG 1”) asked a pretty San Felipe girl walking by if she would sit up on the nerf bar and pass out sponsor decals and she agreed! Man, did the truck get attention with that lovely hood ornament. Our sponsors got their money’s worth of attention. Handing out 400+ sponsor decals to race fans was a lot of fun, too.

Race morning started with last minute prep and rolling to the start line. Mike Koenig and Stu Klein we’re set to drive the first 122 miles then hand the truck off to Troy and Tim for the last 110 miles. Right from the start Mike knew it was going to be a long day for him. While the truck handles the rough very well it’s the spectators lining the course that make it slow and go. They stand on the course and wait until the last second to get out of the way. It was nuts. At one point Mike couldn’t even see the road ahead as the fans were waiting that long to move. Once he got further out of town Mike set into a comfortable pace and kept the truck moving problem-free. Then came race mile 109 and the silt. Deep silt. Trying to find the best line Mike got stuck and buried the rear axle. He tried to get the truck out by himself but it wasn’t happening. Then thankfully some locals showed up and eventually got him out. Didn’t get any names, but thanks guys.

Meanwhile up ahead at RM 122 where Troy and Tim were waiting to get into the truck, an out of control class 1 car missed the turn and struck a cameraman working for John Langley’s COPS TV series race effort. Locos Mocos guy Tim Schrader an ex-EMT used his training and assisted the other EMT/racers in helping the injured spectator. The Score helicopter was on the ground within 25 minutes of the accident where he was flown to San Felipe then immediately to San Diego for medical help. Fortunately there were no broken bones or other injuries to the cameraman and besides some bruising he will have a full recovery.

Once Mike and Stu pulled into the pit and exchanged drivers, Troy and Tim quickly went to work navigating the truck down the beautiful Matomi Wash. At this point they were in a solid 2nd place and decided to take it easy and make it to the finish line. Then, Bam! Near the end of Matomi the line they chose had wash machine size boulders on both sides of the track with another boulder just a little taller than the driveline in the middle. The impact broke the yoke on the driveline. In just under 10 minutes they changed out the driveline and were back under way. The only other problem they had was getting stuck on a sandy steep uphill. A quick call to the nearby Locos Mocos chase crew was made and BCG1 arrived in minutes with a tow strap.

Just before dark the team crossed the finish line with the checkers waved by none other than Troy’s dad, VORRA founder Ed Robinson. Ed was the official SCORE flagger for this race and really enjoyed waving in his son. Everyone on the team was thrilled to have finished their first race in Baja.

Koenig Racing wants to thank all of our race crew who helped out, these guys and gals did a great job making sure we would make the finish.

And special thanks to our sponsors. Without them our first Baja race would not have happened. Baja Bound.com Mexican Insurance, Total Chaos Suspensions, ORW, Red Line Oil, Dezert People, BFGoodrich Tires and , FlameLab Sports Marketing.

February 19, 2009

Koenig Racing had a great race weekend at the 2009 Snore Battle at Primm.

Chaos Matt rode with Mike on Saturday, started 25th (3 every 15 seconds). They battled for 3 laps in the congo line as they relayed bumper taps to the front of the line to get them out of the way. Driveline vibration from the start line slowed the top speed but still hit the dike jump at 73 mph. Finished the moto in 13th place.

Between race inspection we found a bent driveline and bad u joint, replaced those. Then found the pinion gear was missing a tooth. Borrowed a 3rd member from GFO racing, thanks guys. The lower control arm bushings were torn out too due to misalignment in the caster, replaced those.

Chaos Minion rode with Troy Sunday and started 4th row. They were running 11th on lap 1 chasing the V8 of #1428. Lap 2 up to 7th until the screw that holds the ignition with on the back of the switch fell out, found the screw and got going again with about 7 mins of downtime. They put the truck in survival mode thru the 5-6' deep whoops and finished the moto in 15th.

The combined results for the weekend put us in 7th, just 3:20 out of 4th position. Coming into this race with 71 pre-entries the goal was for a top 10 finish. With 51 trucks taking the green flag a 7th place met the goal and beyond.

Thanks to the entire staff and crew at Total Chaos: Matt, Nicole, Minion, Jeremy, Pat, Keith and their significant others as well as my mom and dad as well as the rest of the family that came out to support (their first race). Most importantly thanks to our wives and family for supporting us. Also to the GFO crew for loaning us the 3rd member and the crew at 1477 for all the tools we borrowed that we will now bring to all the races.

Also thanks to our sponsors Total Chaos Fabrication, Baja Bound Insurance Services, Dezert People, Flamelab, ORW, and Red Line Oil.
